At the evening of Oct.12, Zheng Xiaojing, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an academician of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, arrived at the Yuzhong Campus of Lanzhou University to make the first report for the 2018 undergraduate students of the College of Civil Engineering and Mechanics. Huang Ning, dean of the college, Li Xiaoli, secretary of the party committee, Li Zhilong, deputy secretary of the party committee, all undergraduate students of 2018 and some senior students of the College of Civil Engineering and Mechanics attended the report.
With the theme of “bearing the mission and continuing to open up”, Zheng Xiaojing’s report analyzed the scientific development mission bore by young students and explains how students majoring in engineering develop professional competence by taking the example of important role played by mechanics research in the aerospace field. In the report, Zheng Xiaojing stated that General Secretary Xi Jinping has high hopes for the growth and development of young people. On Sept. 10, the National Education Conference was held. Our country has put forward new and higher requirements for the development of higher education. Zheng Xiaojing reviewed the origin of the mechanics of Lanzhou University, expounded the development history of Lanzhou University in nonlinear plate and shell mechanics, electromagnetic nonlinear mechanics and sandstorm environmental mechanics, emphasized the universality of the mechanical thinking mode in scientific research, engineering technology and even administrative management, and encouraged students of all majors to focus on expanding their knowledge and to have a deeper understanding and application of professional knowledge.
At last, Academician Zheng Xiaojing put forward suggestions for young students, encouraging students to build up their ambitions, to grow up proactively, and to make contributions to the country's social and economic development.
