Recently, Zhou Youhe, head of the Department of Mechanics at Lanzhou University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a report titled "Strengthening the Foundation -- the Cornerstone of Academic Development" for undergraduates at Yuzhong Campus. The lecture was held in C301, Tianshan Hall, attended by all the members of the College of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, more than 30 teachers and more than 500 undergraduates. This is the first activity specially organized for undergraduates after the discipline of Mechanics of Lanzhou University was selected as one of the first national spiritual Education Bases for scientists. The report will be presided over by Professor Huang Ning, Dean of the College.
Huang Ning said that the college has always attached great importance to the inheritance and education of the spirit of scientists. He briefly introduced the development course of the mechanics discipline of Lanzhou University and the role and significance of the selection of the national Base of the spirit education of scientists.
Zhou and the academicians had a keynote presentation for about two hours. The content of the report is mainly divided into five parts: the introduction to strengthen the foundation, the decade of Huakuke to open the academic road, the doctoral study to lay the independent scientific research ability, the academic expansion of the work in Lanzhou University and the team research expansion.

Academician Zhou also gave a detailed example of "strengthening the foundation and strengthening the foundation" based on his own 44 years of academic development. After the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1977, he entered Huazhong University of Science and Technology for undergraduate study. After graduation in January 1982, he became a teacher in Huazhong University of Science and Technology and was admitted to the in-service master's degree of the department during this period. In September 1987, he came to Lanzhou University to study for a doctor's degree and has been working in Lanzhou University ever since. His achievements during his undergraduate years have laid a solid foundation for his subsequent teaching and research work. As a teacher, driven by the simple feeling of "don't mislead children", he has demonstrated the courage to innovate and the ability to innovate in both teaching and scientific research work, formed a high sense of responsibility and mission for the work of teachers, and made outstanding achievements in the journey of constantly expanding new frontiers in teaching and scientific research. The detailed cases and historical materials and the vivid stories behind them greatly shocked the teachers and students present and gave practical education to the spirit of scientists. After the report, Zhou and the academicians patiently answered the students' concerns in detail.
Li Xiaoli, secretary of the Party Committee of the College, made a brief summary, saying that as Lanzhou University mechanics discipline was approved as the national educator spirit education base, the first face-to-face report with undergraduates fully explained what the spirit of scientists is. Zhou and the academicians have been rooted in the West for nearly 40 years, and have worked hard in teaching and scientific research. He has led a "Huang Danian teaching team" composed of a number of outstanding talents to inherit and develop the mechanics discipline. After being elected as an academician, Zhou promised the undergraduate students that "I am still willing to teach you until the old age, and this will be firm" in plain language.
