On June 21, at the invitation of College of Civil Engineering and Mechanics and College of Physical Science and Technology of Lanzhou University, Xia Keqing, alumnus of the Physics Department of 1977, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and lecturer professor of the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology, was a guest of the "Centennial Lanmu Famous Lecturers" and delivered an academic report titled "Motion from Particles to Vortexes" for the teachers and students of his Alma mater. Nearly 200 teachers and students from the two colleges were present to listen.
Speaking from his unforgettable experience of studying hard in his Alma mater, Academician Xia Keqing praised his Alma mater for its long history of strengthening the foundation and hitting new talent training mode, which has sent a large number of outstanding talents to various fields of national basic scientific research, truly practicing "self-improvement and being unique".
In the following academic report, Academician Xia Keqing introduced his and his team's systematic research on three frontier problems in the field of fluid mechanics in a simple way, based on his own experience in conducting special experimental research on fluid mechanics for many years: The dispersion behavior of particles at the scale of dissipative turbulence, the spatio-temporal dynamic characteristics of cylindrical vortices in rotating turbulence, and the correlation between the flow structure asymmetry and the turbulent transport efficiency.
In the lively and interesting report, Academician Xia Keqing told about his own attempts and efforts in the process of research, and taught two tips to the graduates and young teachers present: in the interdisciplinary field, different disciplinary research methods and concepts of reference and complement is a shortcut to achieve "achievements"; Accurate experiments are the cornerstone of refining concepts and studying mechanisms.
In the interactive question and answer session, the teachers and students actively asked questions, and Academician Xia answered one by one. The whole session lasted for two hours.
After the presentation, Mr. Zhou Youhe, President of the Institute of Superconducting Mechanics, Lanzhou University, presented the "Kaiyuan Forum" plaque to Mr. Xia on behalf of the Solid Mechanics Committee of the Chinese Society for Mechanics.
